Maria Welsh Berrington was born on the 10th October 1866 at Tipton. She was my Mothers Aunt being the eldest of the six Berrington daughters. On the 18th April 1885 she married Joseph Round. Joseph was an Iron Roller, this was a skilled job and ensured good pay. On the day before her first wedding aniversary her father William Berrington was killed in a roof fall at the Coneygree Pit. He was 44 years old. Ria (as she was known to the family) had either just given birth or was pregnant with her first child Lily. Four more children followed ; Albert, Joseph, Thomas and Letty. Letty collapsed and died suddenly age 23 after washing her hair.
On the 1901 census the family are living at 136 Church Road, Dawley in Shropshire with one 15 years old servant, Harriet Deakin.
In 1911 they are living at 145 High Street, Wellington with one 14 years old servant Violet Bailey.
This photograph was taken at Ketley Hall, where Ria’s daughter lived Lily Round lived after she married Thomas James Henry Teece. It is poignant because Ria died suddenly that weekend age 70. Ria is second from the right.
This is Ria’s obituary ;
I am still hunting down the Welsh connection!
